Nini could barely focus on anything as she got ready to meet Ethan. Her hands were trembling slightly as she brushed her hair, the weight of the day pressing on her chest like an invisible force. She couldn’t shake the feeling. This nervousness that had no reason to exist. But it was there, clinging to her. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to meet Ethan. He had offered to help with her project, even promised to sing for her, which had melted away some of her hesitations. But deep down, Nini knew why she was uneasy. She knew what Ethan wanted, what most men like him sought.
But she wasn’t like the others. Nini had built her life on her spiritual beliefs, her connection to the universe, and she wouldn’t let anyone, especially not someone like Ethan, tear that foundation apart. The connection between them was undeniable, but it terrified her. They were connected, yes, but the universe had a way of leading people down paths that could burn them both. Ethan, with his worldly desires, couldn’t understand that. His mind was cluttered with the noise of society, expectations, and fleeting pleasures.
And yet, Nini couldn’t resist the pull.
When she arrived at the green restaurant Ethan had chosen, she saw him sitting outside, waiting. The air was cool and pleasant, but Nini’s heart raced. She approached slowly, feeling as if every step she took was drawing her closer to something inevitable, something dangerous. Ethan stood up when he saw her, a half-smile playing on his lips, and for a moment, Nini’s resolve wavered. His charm was effortless, but she wouldn’t let it get to her. Not this time.
She greeted him, sitting across the small table. Between them, the space felt electric, charged with unspoken words and unresolved tension. As they exchanged pleasantries, she could feel her guard slipping, bit by bit. Ethan leaned in closer, his voice soft, almost intimate, as he spoke about her project. But it wasn’t his words that mattered. It was the way his eyes never left hers, the way his presence seemed to pull her into his orbit.
At some point, Nini pulled out a small diary from her bag and handed it to him, forcing a smile. “I want to see your handwriting,” she said, hoping to steer the conversation to something safer.
Ethan took the diary without hesitation, his fingers brushing against hers. She felt a jolt of warmth, but quickly pulled her hand back. As Ethan scribbled something on the page, Nini’s heart pounded in anticipation. He handed the diary back to her with a sly smile. When she looked down, her breath caught. He had written in Bangla: “I love you.”
Her lips curled into an involuntary smile, even though her mind screamed at her to stop. She knew where this was heading, and it was somewhere she didn’t want to go. But the resistance was growing harder. Ethan was married, she had found that out, and it brought a strange sense of relief. At least it meant there was a boundary, something that could keep them apart.
Yet, here they were.
Ethan reached across the table, fixing the straw in her juice. His hand lingered just a second too long, his touch sending a spark through her body. Little conversations flowed between them, but every word carried more weight than it should. They planned to watch a movie, but Nini knew what that really meant. She knew what he wanted, and deep down, part of her wanted it too. But she couldn’t give in. Not yet.
As they left the restaurant, the night air wrapped around them, cool and intoxicating. Ethan suggested they take an auto to the theater, and Nini agreed, though her heart was racing for an entirely different reason. As they sat side by side in the small vehicle, the closeness was unbearable. Every brush of his arm against hers sent shockwaves through her body. She was fighting…fighting to keep control, to keep things from spiraling out of her grasp.
But then, in a moment of weakness, she couldn’t resist. She reached for Ethan’s neck and kissed him, hard. It was impulsive, raw, and filled with all the emotions she had been trying to suppress. Her lips moved against his, desperate and hungry. For a fleeting moment, she imagined sinking her teeth into him, tasting his blood, as if the primal part of her was awakening. But she stopped herself, pulling away before things went too far.
When they arrived at the theater, Ethan was visibly tense. Nini noticed the change immediately. His breathing was shallow, and his skin had gone pale. He was fighting some internal battle, one she couldn’t quite understand. “Are you okay?” she asked, her voice laced with concern.
Ethan forced a smile but didn’t respond. He looked around, as if the crowd was suffocating him. Nini knew that feeling. She knew what it was like to be trapped by your own mind, your past trauma haunting you at the worst possible moments. She gently suggested they leave, that they didn’t need to watch the movie, but Ethan insisted on staying. His stubbornness was almost admirable, but Nini couldn’t shake the worry building inside her.
By the time they entered the dark theater, the atmosphere had shifted entirely. The movie played on the screen, but neither of them paid any attention. The space between them crackled with tension, their bodies humming with unspoken desires. Ethan’s hand slid over to hers, and before she could stop herself, she was leaning into him. His fingers found their way under her dress, brushing against her skin, and Nini’s breath hitched.
This wasn’t what she wanted. Not like this. But the war inside her was raging, pulling her in two directions. She wanted him, wanted to feel his touch, but her soul screamed at her to stop. Ethan’s hand slid higher, cupping the curve of her breast, and Nini shuddered under the intensity of it all. His lips found hers again, and this time, there was no holding back. They kissed with a fierceness that made her head spin, their tongues tangling as their breaths grew shallow.
When Ethan bit down on her lower lip, drawing blood, Nini barely noticed. The taste of iron mixed with the kiss, and she felt herself surrendering, even as every fiber of her being fought against it.
This wasn’t just about desire. It was about something deeper, something neither of them fully understood. But Nini knew one thing for sure, if they weren’t careful, this would destroy them both.
